Drywall

Drywall product development is increasingly focused on a practical combination: panels that are easier to handle but durable enough to reach the wall with fewer damaged edges.

What is changing

USG has introduced Sheetrock® Brand UltraLight Tough Panels, a 1/2-inch panel designed around stronger edges, easier handling and cleaner score-and-snap performance. The manufacturer says the panel is up to 12% lighter than standard lightweight panels and is planned for broader national availability in 2026.

For contractors, the important story is not simply lower weight. Edge damage, broken corners and fastener blowouts create extra preparation, waste and finishing time. A panel engineered to resist those jobsite problems can help a crew protect both schedule and finish quality.

What builders should watch

Material selection still has to match the assembly. Fire ratings, sound requirements, moisture exposure, framing spacing and the approved project specifications remain more important than any single product feature. Lighter panels should be evaluated as part of the complete wall or ceiling system.

The direction of the industry is encouraging: manufacturers are working to reduce handling strain and material waste without treating durability as a tradeoff. For Florida builders managing busy schedules and multiple trades, those improvements can make stocking, hanging and finishing more predictable.

The Florida Drywall perspective

Good results still begin with planning. Confirm the specified board, protect material from weather and moisture, coordinate penetrations before hanging and give finish crews the conditions they need. Better products help, but disciplined installation is what turns product innovation into a better wall.
